Should Couples Retire Together? What to Know Before You Decide

What if we want to retire at the same time?

We recently looked at how to navigate retirement when couples retire at different times. But what if you’re aiming to take the leap together? Let’s walk through some of the most important conversations and planning decisions you’ll want to have if you’re considering simultaneous retirement.

Start with a Shared Vision

Remember the Newlywed Game? That show was all about seeing how well couples really knew each other. While that was just for laughs, this part of retirement planning is very real.

Before you retire together, ask:

Do we share the same vision for retirement?

Why do we want to retire now—are we simply tired of work, or ready to explore new adventures together?

Have we talked about where we want to live, what kind of lifestyle we want, and what our goals are?

These conversations are critical. Aligning your retirement dreams up front ensures you’re not heading into this next chapter with mismatched expectations.

Be Prepared for More Time—Together

Retirement means more time spent together, which can be a blessing, but also a shift in dynamic. It’s worth asking:

Have we discussed personal space and solo activities?

Are we both comfortable with how much time we’ll be spending together?

It’s important to talk about how you’ll each maintain your own identity and interests in retirement—even while enjoying new experiences as a couple.

Align Your Financial Values

Retirement planning is as much emotional as it is financial. Couples should be aligned on how money will be spent and managed going forward:

Have we agreed on a budget for travel, hobbies, and other discretionary spending?

Are we helping adult children financially, and if so, how much are we comfortable with?

Are we on the same page emotionally when it comes to money—especially if one of us is a saver and the other is a spender?

These conversations can reduce stress and help prevent financial disagreements down the line.

Coordinate Key Financial Decisions

From Social Security to investment accounts, planning ahead makes a big difference:

When will each of you file for Social Security? Filing strategies can significantly impact your benefits.

Which employer plan offers the best match or investment options? Prioritize contributing there before retiring.

How will you draw down assets in retirement in a tax-efficient way? Simply having money in various accounts isn’t enough—you need a withdrawal strategy that minimizes taxes.

Sometimes even a small adjustment in your income or tax strategy can lead to a major improvement in your long-term outcomes.

Address the Risks—Before They Happen

Make sure your plan includes preparation for the unexpected:

Should we pay off the house before retiring?

Is our investment risk level aligned with our retirement goals?

Do we have a plan for healthcare coverage if we’re retiring before Medicare eligibility?

Have we made decisions about long-term care or legacy planning?

These aren’t always easy conversations—but they’re essential to building a resilient plan.
