Welcome back to the Confident Retirement Journey. I’m Craig Sullivan. Today we’re going to answer a question from a viewer who’s dreaming of retiring by age 55. They’re asking if this dream is even possible with their current savings and investments, so let’s break down their situation. Let’s explore what they need to consider our viewer. We’ll call Retirement Dreamer just turned 50. His wife is 48. I live in the suburbs of Dallas. Together, they’ve done a great job and they’ve accumulated 2.25 million and investments between 401 Ks, IRAs, and other accounts. They have no debt. They have $600,000 in home equity and they’ve set aside enough money for their daughter’s college expenses. True impressive financial foundation with their discipline saving habits. Retired by 55 is not out of reach, but there’s some important factors to consider healthcare costs in early retirement. It’s one of the biggest expenses that you’re going to find when you retire early.

If you retire at 55, you’ll need to cover your healthcare costs privately until you’re eligible for Medicare at age 65. That’s 10 years for you and potentially 12 years for your wife. There’s a couple of workarounds. For example, if your wife continues working, she might be able to cover both of you through her employer’s health plan. Alternatively, you could consider part-time work that offers health benefits. This wouldn’t be full retirement, but it would give you more freedom while covering a major expense. The next step is balancing your current and future spending. Understand that your spending might change in retirement, living in Dallas, a dynamic, but also can be very expensive city depending on your area and your lifestyle could lead to increased spending as you find yourself with more free time. Even though you have no debt, a significant amount in savings, the cost of living and inflation could eat right into your nest egg faster than you expect.

This is where it’s very important to have financial play to safeguard your retirement. It’s crucial to map out your income expenses in detail. This is why having your retirement journey mapped out is so important. Part of that is creating an income strategy that allows you to live off your investments without depleting them. Many people use the 4% rule as a guideline, which suggests withdrawing about 4% of your portfolio each year with your 2.25 million nest egg. This will provide about $90,000 of income for you to live off of each year. However, this is just a starting point. You’ll need to adjust based on your specific needs and goals when it comes to cracking your retire dream. One of the best parts of planning for retirement is envisioning what your retirement looks like. Work with your wife to map out your ideal retirement lifestyle, including both the essentials like utilities and healthcare, and the fun stuff like travel and hobbies.

Compare these future expenses to your current spending and see how they align with your 4% withdrawal strategy. This exercise will help you determine if your drape retirement, this financially feasible. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the details as well regularly review your retirement plan to ensure it aligns with your goals as you approach retire. It’s also important to consider how retiring early will impact your social security benefits, both for you and your spouse. Retirement is not a pipe dream for you. With careful planning and ongoing adjustments, you can create the retirement of your dreams. If you’re dreaming of an early retirement, like our viewer in Dallas, take the time to plan carefully, work with an advisor, map out your expenses and ensure that your savings can support the lifestyle you envision.
